About us

We love silly theater. We love dark theater. We love weird theater. We love boundless imagination. We love a powerful story with a twist. We love music from a live band. We love doing things differently from how they’ve always been done. We love being creative on a budget. We love minimal sets complimented by fantastical, high-concept costumes and makeup. We love making our audience laugh and gasp. We love making our audience a little bit uncomfortable. We love making musical theater in Berlin.

In 2019, director Elijah Nielebock knew they wanted to bring the hit StarKid show “The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals” to Berlin. Full of enthusiasm, with a motivated team and a shoestring budget, rehearsals began - and were brought to a screeching halt by the COVID-19 pandemic. Determined not to give up on the dream, kind of musical returned in 2024 to finally put the beloved production onstage - and, in the process, evolve into the group that continues to take Berlin community theater by storm today.

kind of musical are a project-by-project troupe that assemble as a core team of creatives whenever they feel moved to make something. We hold open auditions and aim to cast a mix of returning friends and new faces. Our ensembles include performers from all across the Berlin musical theater scene, and we are proud to bring together a company as varied and exciting as the city’s thriving musical subculture.

We are a non-professional group creating art simply for the love of it. We have financed all our productions with the generosity of our community, who have shown us inspiring levels of support during our Startnext crowdfunding campaigns. With their help, we can keep our cast contributions and ticket sales lower than average, allowing more people the chance to see, and create, musical theater. For that, we say thank you.
